What our customers think about us:
Joseph: Newbiggin

Hello,

a few months ago I had my designer rimless spectacles reglazed by your
company. I was delighted by the results and cannot recommend you highly enough.
Excellent service.

However, I accidentally stood on my spectacles and have broken one of the
lenses (frame OK)

I would like them reglazed again and wish to know how to do this.

Richard: Derby

Hi David

About Bifocal glasses
Bifocals are a type of glasses that have two distinct optical powers.

Bifocals are most commonly prescribed to people who also require a pair of glasses where they can read and see distance clearly and are not disturbed by the lines in the lenses where the two optical powers meet.

Probably invented by that profuse inventor Benjamin Franklin, many ideas have been made into practical inventions by more than one person at the same time, and eyeglasses with bifocal (twin) lenses may have been such a case.

Evidence exists, however, that, Benjamin Franklin certainly was amongst the first to wear bifocal spectacles, and letters he wrote indicate that he invented them independently, even though he may not have been the first.

Original bifocals eye wear were designed with the most convex lenses (for close viewing) in the lower half of the frame and the least convex lenses in the upper section of the spectacle lens.

Up until the beginning of the 20th century two different lenses, one for distance and one for reading, were cut in half and combined together in the rim of the glasses frame. This type of construction led to a number of early complications and these types of glasses were quite fragile.

After a while a method for fusing the two sections of the lenses together was developed and today most bifocals are created by moulding a reading segment into a main distance lens and are available with the reading segments in a variety of shapes and sizes.

The most popular of, and the one we offer, is the D-segment, 28 mm wide. While the D-segment bifocal offers superior optics, an increasing number of people opt for progressive lenses – see our section on varifocals.

It is interesting to note that nature also uses the “bifocal lens”

Uniquely in Thermonectus Marmoratus ( The Diving Beetle) it was discovered that during its stage as a larva, it was found to have two retinas with two distinct focal planes that are substantially separated, in the manner of bifocals to switch their vision from up close to distance. This would make it easy to capture prey, mostly mosquito larvae.

So far this is the first recorded use of bifocal technology in the natural world. (watch this space).

Varifocals lenses and what they do for you
The top image shops a graphical representation of a pair of bifocal glasses showing the approximate fields of near (reading) and distance vision.

Visual depiction of Varifocals (progressive) glasses.

bifocals glasses and what you can see
The lower image gives a visual perspective of the two distinct areas of optical power in the glasses.

However, the eyes of the glasses wearer are far closer to the lens than these images depict and the different part of the spectacles lens is far less noticeable. Generally, most people can adjust to bifocals glasses in a short period of time as the user learns to move the head (or the reading material) rather than the eyes.

There will be a distinct separating line between the different prescriptions and many people are able to tolerate their glasses and they will fit seamlessly into their lives, some may have difficulty tolerating them.

>For the new user, bifocals can cause headaches and even dizziness. Acclimation to the small field of view offered by the reading segment of bifocals can take some time, as the user needs to learn to move the head or the reading material rather than the eyes.

Computer monitors are generally placed directly in front of users and can lead to muscle fatigue due to the unusual straight and constant movement of the head. Where a wearer has these kinds of problems with bifocals glasses, the use of single vision lenses specifically for computer use is suggested.

Our pricing policy on bifocals lenses is specifically planned to give top quality glasses at affordable prices

Bifocals in the office.

How our lives have changed with the advent of the Personal Computer to the office!

Statistics indicate that In Europe, about 60% of 40 to 65 year olds now use computers at work and at home.

In almost all areas the Personal Computer has improved our lives, but for some, this change is not entirely comfortable because, if you wear normal eyewear, computers can put a strain on our eyes.

This strain manifests itself in symptoms such as:

  • Blurred vision,

  • Eyes that become dry, red and irritated,

  • Sensitivity to light and headaches.

  • Backache (due to incorrect posture)

Statistics indicate that up to 75% of computer users experience one or more of these symptoms regularly, even when wearing spectacles.

Whilst your everyday glasses can be perfect for your normal life they may not give you optimal vision when you are using a computer.

We can help you here. We can offer specialised bifocals glasses for use as office glasses which can make the perfect solution.

You will benefit from full clear screen vision. . You'll also benefit from a more comfortable and natural posture when using a computer. See below-

Why its important to see your photograph with our frames for varifocals and bifocals glasses.

For varifocals glasses the ideal is the centre of the pupils should be at the centre of the progressive lens.

This rarely happens, our faces are different and the glasses we buy vary in size, the size of the lenses, the position they sit on the nose, etc. (the pictures above are highly exaggerated to illustrate this point).

When we receive your picture we use it to position the distance part of your lenses where your pupil is looking straight ahead.

This means that-
  • Look straight ahead with varifocal lenses and you can see clearly in the distance.
  • Look slightly downwards, and the progressive vision gets closer, where you can read music scores whilst playing or see your computer clearly whilst browsing, typing etc.

  • Look downward through the lower part of the progressive lens and you can read books and do close up work such as sewing, embroidery etc.

Taking photographs for fitting Bifocal glasses.

Bifocal spectacles are individualistic. Each pair of bifocal glasses must be fitted to its owner. This has always been a dilemma for internet glasses companies. We at Eyesright have taken a new view to this and using advanced digital tecniques, have devised a foolproof way of overcoming this using photographs.

  • Your photograph must contain the head and the top of your shoulders.
  • Hold a credit card against your chin as level as you can for our perspective calculations.
  • Avoid using the flash as this increases the likelihood of glare on lenses.
  • Daylight is best, such as from a window, as this can provide as equal a balance as possible to avoid glare on lenses and shadows on the face.
  • Make sure you have a neutral expression - closed mouth (not laughing or frowning)
  • You must be looking straight at the camera (not tilted head) and show your eyes open (no hair in eyes or face).
  • Your pupils should be clear and not obscured by reflections.
  • Your glasses should fit comfortably and naturally.
  • Follow this guide and your varifocals glasses will give perfect results and require a minimum time for you to get used to them.
